SIUD Christmas Carnival & Nursery Recital 2019
Wow! We really can't believe how fast the year has gone. We're busy finishing up our final week of classes and looking forward to putting our dancing feet up and enjoying a mince pie or two!
Our Nursery Recital on Sunday was a lovely festive end to the year. We welcomed Hip Hoppers from nurseries across the city, and their families, to the event at Broughton High School. This is the one time in the year when our nursery classes can get together and showcase all of their hard work. It's also a great opportunity for grown ups to meet their child's dance teacher and put a face to a name!
The morning started with a festive carnival including Christmas crafts, calendar making and biscuit decorating. Our families were then welcomed into the theatre, where each class had their moment on stage to display their routine.
Seeing our littlest Hip Hoppers on the stage was so rewarding. As teachers we spend weeks preparing, practising routines, and attempting to explain the concept of a “show”. For our nursery children, weekly classes in nursery with their friends, nursery staff and dance teacher is a familiar, comfortable environment. Going from there to performing on a big stage, in a different place, in front of their grown ups as well as many unknown faces, is a huge ask.
During the classes running up to the recital, some children were super enthusiastic “My whole family are coming and I'm so excited”, some super confident “I know the whole dance so you don't even need to show me“, whilst others, understandably, a bit less sure.
The courage and confidence were fantastic, not to mention the super cool moves to some funky tunes! The smiling faces leaving the stage reminded us how important performance opportunities are even for the littlest dancers.
Thank you to everyone who came along, and a huge well done to our dancers!
We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas break, and we look forward to seeing you back at class in 2020!
